Head Chef/Kitchen Manager required for a Hackney Wick canal side bar and kitchen which is also an independent music and art space operating as an experiment in ethical and sustainable business. 

Grow is looking for ambitious, motivated and creative Head Chef/Kitchen Manager to join the team to lead on building on its reputation for sustainability including being one of Foodism’s 16  best sustainable restaurants in London in 2019 and one of its top 10 bars in 2018.

The menu is carefully designed so its high-quality, sustainability-sourced and served at speed to ensure customers have an excellent service as part of their overall experience in this unique space and in harmony with the diverse events it hosts (including live jazz, reggae and art festivals).  

The ideal candidate will have previous experience as a Head Chef/Kitchen Manager in a premium restaurant environment and be comfortable with designing a freshly made menu with a modern take on Middle Eastern and Eastern Mediterrean cuisine (we are happy for other influences as you will see from our previous/current menus). You will also need to innovate and be inspired by current food trends.  The menu uses British seasonal ingredients and is predominantly vegan and vegetarian (at least 60%).

Head Chef/Kitchen Manager Responsibilities;

  • Planning, organising and directing the preparation and cooking of food to build on the Grow's reputation for quality and sustainability

  • Construct inspiring menus which ensure speed and consistency of the servings

  • Manage stock, profit margins and wastage within agreed budgets

  • Plan and make orders of equipment or ingredients according to identified shortages & needs.

  • Reporting issues and problems and arranging for repairs when necessary 

  • Hire, manage and train 1-2 sous chef and KPs, including rota, attendance and payroll (dependent on season)

  • Outstanding communication and leadership skills to foster a climate of cooperation and respect between co-workers

  • Be responsible for all aspects of food safety, HS and COSHH

  • Maintain legislation, compliance and due diligence


  • Proven experience as head chef / kitchen manager

  • Exceptional proven ability of kitchen management

  • Passion for fresh food and sustainability with a proven ability to prepare and deliver high quality dishes

  • Ability to lead and direct the small kitchen team work under pressure including dividing responsibilities and monitoring progress

  • Up-to-date with culinary trends and kitchen processes

  • Good understanding of useful computer programs (Google Suite and POS)

Reports to: Directors

Responsible for: Kitchen team of 2/3 (dependent on season and event)

Salary: £28,000 - £32,000 per annum (dependant on experience)

Job Type: Full-Time

Payment: Monthly/weekly (In arrears)

Kitchen core hours: Tuesday– Sunday Midday - 10pm (not needed to be in the kitchen at all times)
