GROW LIVE: FRAKA (LIVE) // BODY ORCHESTRA (LIVE) // GIONATAN SCALI (DJ) // AFROBEAT // JAZZ // BROKEN BEAT // WORLD MUSIC

Bringing their genre-blurring grooves to Grow Hackney, Fraka are an exciting new force in London’s live music scene, ready to ignite the dancefloor with their high-energy fusion of jazz, afrobeat, and broken beat.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS AND DJS

A riot of rhythm, groove, and soaring melodies, Fraka are a band that demands to be heard live. This seven-piece collective fuses jazz with afrobeat, broken beat, highlife, and hip-hop, creating deep, hypnotic grooves that are impossible to resist. Lush psychedelic soundscapes meet tight horn lines and driving rhythms, making for a dynamic and high-energy show that’s built for the dancefloor.

Their name comes from fracas—a noisy, unruly clash of voices—and that spirit runs through their music, where improvisation meets deep-rooted groove in an electric live performance. With members from across Europe, Fraka bring a fresh and fearless approach to jazz fusion, and they’re the perfect band to kick off your Friday night.

Expect serious musicianship, bold sounds, and a set that will keep you moving from start to finish.

Support Fraka are Body Orchestra, this new four-piece ensemble is made up of composer and singer Vincent C Smith (Insecure Men, Muckspreader, Pet Deaths, Fat Dog, Dan Lyons and the Tenants), drummer Seb Bloom (Gionatan Scali, Bande To Part), double bassist Sam Hollis (Modern Nature, Fraszer Merrick) and violinist Beth Elliott (Kassia String Quartet).

Formed after meeting at Trinity Laban Conservatoire, the group found common ground in a shared love of improvisation and experimental sound. Their music moves between free jazz, folk ballads, and ambient noise, drawing inspiration from Ornette Coleman, Nick Drake, Tim Hecker and Swans.

Body Orchestra’s live set is dynamic and immersive, shifting from delicate textures to moments of raw intensity. One for the curious listener.

Gionatan Scali is a Turin-born, East London-based musician, activist, and visual artist. He leads a music ensemble under his own name, with two albums and an EP to date. Earlier this year, Gionatan played a sold-out show with his band at Grow to celebrate the launch of his single Modern Man, and we’re excited to welcome him back, this time behind the decks, kicking off the evening and keeping the dancefloor moving and shaking until 2am.

Alongside his studio work, Gionatan has been sharing his eclectic vinyl collection across London’s most exciting listening bars and clubs, including Spiritland, Jumbi, and Next Door Records, as well as further afield in Paris, Berlin, and Brussels. Known for his mercurial, unpredictable personality, Gionatan channels a wide range of life experiences into his creative work.

JONNY LIEBECK QUINTET (LIVE) // JAZZ // SOUL // ELECTRONIC GROOVES

Jonny Liebeck’s genre-defying jazz journey returns canal-side to GROW Hackney on Wednesday 14th May, blending classic influences with contemporary sounds for an unforgettable night.

ABOUT THE BAND

Pianist, composer, and bandleader Jonny Liebeck returns to Grow Hackney with his quintet for a night of genre-blending jazz, soul, and electronic grooves. Known for his distinctive fusion of jazz, funk, house, jungle, and breakbeat, Jonny’s music bridges the gap between traditional and contemporary sounds, creating a fresh and dynamic experience.

"Grow has always been a warm, welcoming place for me to play jazz. In 2019, the Wednesday jazz jam was like my Friday night out, and in recent times I've been putting on yearly shows there with my band. I'm looking forward to returning this May." – Jonny Liebeck

Fresh off the release of his latest project, Influences EP, Jonny leads an all-star band featuring some of London’s most exciting young musicians:

Band Line-Up:

Piano/Keyboard – Jonny Liebeck

Alto Saxophone – Donovan Haffner

A graduate of the Royal Academy of Music and alumni of Tomorrow’s Warriors, Donovan’s musicianship has taken him to prestigious London jazz venues like Ronnie Scott’s, The Jazz Café, The Vortex, and Pizza Express in Soho and Holborn. He has also performed at renowned festivals such as the EFG London Jazz Festival, Pitchfork Festival, Manchester Jazz Festival, We Out Here Festival, and Brainchild.

Electric Guitar – Owen Snider

Trained at Trinity Laban Conservatoire, Owen received an MMus in Jazz Performance, studying under Hannes Riepler and Mike Outram. He performs across London and internationally with a diverse range of artists. Owen is currently focused on writing music for an upcoming album and gigging across London and the UK.

Double/Electric Bass – Ezekiel Ajie

A versatile upright and electric bass player, Ezekiel seamlessly blends jazz, funk, and Afrobeat, creating captivating grooves. Known for his dynamic performances, he has worked with artists like Mansur Brown, Tara Lily, Anjelo Dison, Rick Leon James, and Jas Kayser. His technical skill and creativity make him a standout figure in contemporary music.

Drums – Filippo Galli

Filippo Galli is a London-based drummer with a diverse musical background that spans jazz, electronic music, rock, and pop. Born and raised in Italy, he did not pursue formal academic education until moving to London in 2015, where he earned an MMus in Popular Music Performance from UEL and a Master's in Music Composition for Film from UWL. In recent years, Filippo has performed at some of London’s finest venues, including the Roundhouse, the Jazz Café, and Ronnie Scott's.

"Jonny Liebeck is a jazz musician who dares to do things differently. His range of influences is probably unique. There is almost certainly no other musician on the London music scene (as lively, diverse, and open to new ideas as it is) who has found such instinctively musical ways to combine jazz and electronic dance music. It is almost as if he is creating a new art form." – Sebastian Scotney, London Jazz News

QUESTNIGHTS #1 // SUBQUEST // MAXWELL OWIN // ANJA NGOZI // CHIMINYO (DJ SET) // VIVA CEE

To mark the release of their debut EP Insert Coin, Subquest introduce Questnights, a new club night rooted in forward-thinking sounds and deep musical exploration.

ABOUT THE DJS

This first edition brings together a carefully selected line-up of artists working at the intersection of electronic music, improvisation and bass culture. At the centre is Subquest, the collaborative project of drummer and producer Chiminyo and engineer-composer Viva Cee. Their sound draws from broken beat, UK bass and leftfield electronics, merging rhythmic intensity with detailed, high-fidelity production. With shared backgrounds in jazz, soul and club music, their work balances technical depth with real dancefloor energy – music that is as playful as it is precise.

Joining them is Maxwell Owin, a long-standing figure in London’s underground music scene. Known for his collaborations with Ezra Collective, Joe Armon-Jones and MC Pinty, he brings a distinctive sound shaped by deep grooves, analogue textures and a broad range of influences.

Also on the line-up is producer, DJ and artist Anja Ngozi, whose sets move intuitively across genre and tempo. Her work has featured in projects for the Tate Modern, the V&A and ICA, and her musical output blurs ambient, experimental club music and global sounds with a free-spirited touch.

The night also features solo sets from Chiminyo and Viva Cee, each bringing their own perspective to the decks. Expect a wide-ranging evening of sound, from UK bass and broken beat to textural electronics and percussive futurism, all grounded in deep musical connection and a shared sense of play.

LOVE IS EVERYWHERE #6 // TINA EDWARDS // HANDSON FAMILY // JAZZ DANCE FLOOR // HOUSE // LATIN // BRAZILIAN // BROKEN BEAT & MORE

The sixth edition of Tina Edwards’ jazz dancefloor party lands canal side at GROW Hackney on Saturday 17th May. Paying homage to classic jazz dance floor culture but with a modern twist.

ABOUT THE DJS

Joining us are purveyors of excellent taste and spotlighters of impeccable black music; the Handson Family.  Come early for a FREE UK Jazz dance lesson from one of the world’s best, Masumi Endo, 7-8PM, catering to absolute beginners or dancers who want to brush up on their foundational techniques. Fancy footwork or simple two-step; the floor is yours.

DJs, selectors and increasingly tastemakers, Handson Family are somewhat of an enigma when it comes to describing exactly what they do. Fiercely proud of their irrespective South London heritages, married couple Chris and Cyndi have always leaned into uplifting and representing their community with an unwavering commitment to platform Black British music and club culture with an inclusive yet serious approach. Over the course of their career, the pair are fondly known for creating much needed third space music events in less conventional places with a DIY ‘Handson’ approach. Over the 20 years plus that they have worked together, their passion for genuine collaboration has seen them work with an array of notable musicians, DJs and events. Their own DJ sets are not to be underestimated. Their ability to weave genre-spanning narratives does not erode away from the often uplifting dancefloor energy they are able to produce, all whilst keeping their musical hearts and roots firmly deferential to the culture that raised them.

Tina Edwards is a DJ at the forefront of the UK Jazz explosion. In the wake of live acts breaking through onto major stages, it’s time for Jazz to dominate on the dancefloor. Having been a vocal pioneer of the UK scene for a decade—and DJing for the past 5—Tina proves that jazz and club culture are perfect partners.

WIth contagious energy and deep music knowledge—from West African groove and latin-house to 00’s Italo Jazz—Tina’s sets are never predictable. She performs across the UK and has played in Paris, Berlin, Hamburg, Chicago and LA, all as an independent artist. She’s shared line-ups with Gilles Peterson, Colleen Murphy, Coco Maria, Scarlett O Malley, Delfonic, Rebecca Vasmant, Poly-Ritmo and more. Her party, Love is Everywhere, puts jazz dance floor at the forefront—along with Latin, Brazilian and house—and pays homage to the likes of Dingwalls and Shiftless Shuffle.

Tina hosts multi-genre new music show Next Big Thing on British Airways as well as her self-titled monthly residency on Soho Radio—not to mention the occasional Bandcamp Weekly. As one of Worldwide FMs longest serving residents, Tina launched the popular breakfast show WW Daily, and hosted extra shows: EZH and Universal Sanctuary. In 2022 she presented the TV documentary JAZZ UK :Spitting Fire which aired on BBC One and BBC Four - testament to the fact that Tina is a trusted broadcaster and tastemaker. As a curator, she heads up Queer Jazz, promoting LGBTQIA+ talent in the jazz community, and re:sonate, programming far-reaching line-ups with fellow tastemaker, Tim Garcia.

SUAVE Y SALVAJE // AKOLA TAMBO (LIVE) // CHICO MAJARA (LIVE) // LATIN // PUNK

A wild night of Latin American music as you have never experienced it. Join us for an evening of dancing bodies where even the live acts decide to merge in a unique creation.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Suave Y Salvaje is amongst the first Latin-Punk events in London. Expect to be taken into a dancing journey through tropical landscapes inhabited by an uncompromising punk attitude. From the Caribbean coasts of Colombia to the streets of London.

London-based Akolá Tambó bring the ancestral rhythms of bullerengue, a drum-fueled Afro-Colombian music and dance tradition rooted in community and celebration. Their trance-inducing performances inspire joy and connection, inviting audiences to rediscover their roots through the heartbeat of the drum. The name Akolá Tambó—meaning “remember the drum”—reflects their mission to honour tradition and the transformative power of rhythm.

Chico Majara mix the tropical feel of Latin music with the intensity of punk and land on their feet with feline grace. An act that sets the dance floor on fire with an energy that is elegant and raw, swagger and dagger. Two percussionists lay out irresistible grooves reminiscent of early Latin Boogaloo and Salsa.  The rhythm section sways sensually. Proto-punk guitars and an unpredictable performance bring an exhilarating sense of danger. Chico Majara’s live show is a feel-good, sassy and cathartic experience.

During the event Akolá Tambó and Chico Majara will join forces for a unique number where the traditions of Caribbean Colombia and the savage sounds of punk come together. Be witness to this special moment and join the sweet madness.

DJ Paskal (Rough&Tough) will be spinning an original all-vinyl selection curated for the occasion. Specialising in Caribbean and Latin music Paskal has been promoting two successful tropical nights in London, Cool Breeze and Chicha Por Favor. For Suave y Salvaje he will be bringing some gritty garage sounds and blending them with some of the best of cumbia, salsa and boogaloo.

ROTATION POLICY // PETE BBE // D.V.D // ELLAWEEZ // SOULFUL HOUSE // DISCO // FUNK

If you are looking for a cheerful, fun and welcoming party to celebrate the start of the warmer months, look no further.

ABOUT THE EVENT

Rotation Policy and Grow are joining forces to bring you a night of soulful sounds, deep grooves and unstoppable energy, powered by a mix of London club culture figureheads and exciting up-and-coming talent.

At the heart of it all is Pete BBE, a true pioneer of eclectic club culture. As co-founder of the legendary Barely Breaking Even (BBE Records), Pete has spent the last three decades championing real music across funk, soul, disco, hip hop, house and beyond. From humble beginnings as a freestyle night in London's Chinatown, BBE grew into a globally respected label and movement, home to iconic releases from the likes of J Dilla, Pete Rock, Roy Ayers, Madlib and many more. Few imprints have done more to bridge genres and generations, creating a space where deep musicality and open-minded club culture thrive.

Pete's DJ sets are a direct extension of that spirit: soulful, surprising and rooted in a deep love of crate-digging and musical discovery. Expect a night that moves effortlessly between styles, keeping the dancefloor smiling from start to finish.

NEW CAR SMELL (LIVE) // EP LAUNCH // BRASS PUNK

Notorious Brass - Punks, NEW CAR SMELL, return to their home-turf at Grow to launch their 2nd EP of their new 4-part series.

ABOUT THE BAND

This chapter sees the trio taking their most ambitious and high-paced musical stunts out for a spin. Blending rock, drum and bass and hip hop into a sound that’s fresh, raw and unmistakably theirs, they create something that moves bodies and captures attention through intensity and self-awareness.

Born out of a desire to challenge convention, NEW CAR SMELL refuses to be boxed in. Tuba isn’t just for classical. Sax isn’t confined to jazz. Beats don’t need programming. Their sound is alive and unfiltered, shaped by risk and reinvention.

Once described as a punk trio disguised as a brass band, their live shows are a masterclass in sardonic energy, precision and breakneck tempo changes. Expect sweaty chaos, sharp turns and dance moves that defy logic.

From underground venues like The Jago, Rich Mix and Hootananny to major festival stages at Boomtown and Camp Bestival, NEW CAR SMELL have built a reputation for making music that demands attention and refuses to play it safe.

SOUL ON THE CANAL SIDE // MUCHO SOUL & GUESTS // SOUL // JAZZ // DEEP HOUSE // DISCO

Soul On The Canal Side returns for a further series of Summer season Parties for 2025! Starting early, join us for another epic summer session, full of jazzy soulful goodness lasting long into the night.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

The Mucho Soul crew have put together another stellar lineup of top selectors to take you through the afternoon and into the early evening out on the Canal Side Terrace. Expect everything from Classic and 2-step Soul, Jazz and Funk to Deep and Soulful House music - Ket and Alan always ensure that their guests apply the same eclectic musical policy!

Kyri has been running R2 Records since its foundation back in 1999. During the past 25 years, R2 have released classic music by some of the greatest names in House and soulful music, including Louie Vega, Osunlade, Karizma, Atjazz, Ron Trent and Floating Points, amongst many others.

Like his label, Kyri’s DJ sets reflect a wide spectrum of genres from funk, boogie, disco, jazz through to Afro, Latin and House. Currently hosting the monthly “Really Real Food Show” on 'Do You Radio', Kyri incorporates his two major passions, food and music!... possibly the world’s only live cooking radio show and also has a regular show on the new OneJazz.net platform.

Music has always been in Jerry Frempong’s DNA, influenced by his late Father who led the way in pioneering the Ghanaian ‘Hi Life’ sound he was exposed to a musical staple that consisted of a fusion of organic and electronic African beats, bass and rhythms. As a lover of vinyl, he’s spent many a time carefully selecting his tunes and to date, he’s had the opportunity to grace the wheels of steel at clubs such as Ministry of Sound, Sankeys, Plan B, Sosho, Mint Club, Kensington Roof Gardens, Paramount Club, The Whitehouse, Cafe de Paris, and many other venues across the UK and Ibiza. Recognised by many as an all round musical selector and vibe creator, he’s warmed the decks for the likes of Danny Rampling, Nicky Holloway, Joey Negro, Norman Jay, Robert Owens, Luke Solomon and many more. Expect to get hot, as in the words of Jerry Frempong… “If you don’t sweat, it aint a set”

Si Baker has been a mainstay of the Black Music Industry for over 30 years, working in the Vinyl distribution sector for Greyhound, Mo's Music and The Perfect Circle Music Co.

As an avid collector and club-going archetypal 'Soul Boy', he's been a DJ and selector since the early 80s with a taste that spans all aspects of Jazz, Funk and Soul from the early 60's to the present day.

His monthly show for Totally Wired Radio features a vast array of artists, including Horace Silver, Donald Byrd, Freddie Hubbard, Curtis Mayfield, Aretha Franklin and many more.

Mucho Soul began life back in 2001 as a monthly club night in Soho. The brainchild of long time muso’s and record collectors Alan Kenny Arscott (DJ A.K.A) and Ket Shah their soulful concept has developed into a promotional outfit and DJ collective that features an eclectic selection of black influenced dance music from Jazz, Reggae, Funk, Broken Beat and House, right through to the very best in Nu Disco and Electronica. In recent years, Mucho Soul have graced the stages of Wild Canvas in Bedford, Campfire in Kings Cross, Vocalbooth in Spain and The We Out Here festival in Dorset with a further overseas booking most recently for the 2025 Amor Andalucia Festival in Southern Spain. They launched their Soul On The Canal Side parties for Grow back in 2017 - a series of Summer Season monthly parties that have continued annually between June and Sept.

NOT THE USUAL JAM SESSION // OPEN JAM // FREE

A unique musical experience that breaks the mould. David (The Orbalist, Hackney Rhythm) hosts a jam that is accessible for everyone—no more pay-to-play, no more rehearsed sets. A space where synths, sequencers, MPCs, and E-drums harmonise with guitars, basses, keys, and acoustic drums.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

When Alessandro Corda and David met at the jam, they immediately realised they shared the same passion for music and had similar values. Alex, a versatile musician, DJ, and producer, and a regular at London’s jams and host of a couple, offered to work closely with David. Not only did he manage the stage, but he also contributed behind the scenes, taking the jam to the next level.

Join us on the first Sunday of each month. Admission is free and safe and welcoming to the newcomer or seasoned performer. Whether you’re a keyboard virtuoso, a beatmaker, or a storyteller with a voice, this jam is for you. Bring your passion and your open mind. Let’s create music that transcends the ordinary and be part of the Not The Usual Jam and Grow musical community.

Our stage has hosted the tentative strumming of novice guitarists, the mesmerising loops of experienced producers, and the raw vocals of singers discovering their voices. From Charlie Stacey to Qoha or George The Poet, our stage has welcomed talented artists from various disciplines, including regulars: Alex Mike The Mic, Freddie Mpanga, Nico (MoorMoor), Conor Larkin, Matt Duduryn, Tom Caton, Richard Castle, Simon (Koyoka), and many others who come together to share their music experience, celebrate their progress, enhance growth, and enjoy each other - keeping eclecticism our flagship. The NTUJ session is a sandbox for sonic exploration, where David conducts, orchestrates, and brings people together. Here, musical boundaries dissolve, genres intertwine, and magic is born. Bring your instruments, synths, drum machines, unconventional gear, and curiosity.

If you’d like to take part show up with your instrument, any questions that you may have, please send them to infohackneyrhythm@gmail.com

DEEPDIG SUMMER SPECIAL // TIM GARCIA (4 HOUR SET) // TUMBAITO (LIVE // VANDORTA // LATIN // JAZZ // SOUL // FUNK // DEEP HOUSE // BROKEN BEAT

DeepDig Summer Special arrives at Grow Hackney with an unmissable evening of underground grooves: join us as Tim Garcia digs deep for 4 hours and experience the live Afro-Latin energy of Tumabito’s performance.

ABOUT THE EVENT

Tim Garcia headlines this DeepDig Summer Special with an extended four-hour journey through the deepest corners of house, broken beat, jazz, Latin and Afro-centric sounds. As a Rinse FM resident, former host on Jazz FM and Worldwide FM, and founder of the Musica Macondo label, Tim’s sets are renowned for their impeccable flow, rare edits and globe-spanning influences. Expect a masterclass in seamless genre-blending that carries you from sunset into the small hours.

Joining Tim’s voyage is Tumabito, Williams Cumberbache’s dynamic Afro-Latin ensemble. They bring live percussion, jazz improvisation and Latin grooves together in a performance that amplifies the very records that inspire our DJs—turning studio magic into a visceral, communal experience.

Warm-up duties fall to Vandorta, whose deep vinyl knowledge and passion for funk, broken beat and global grooves have earned her residencies at Sounds of the Universe, radio shows in Amsterdam and festival slots from London to Tokyo. Her selections set the tone, weaving history and innovation into a thrilling prelude.

WAH WAH LIVE // HEKATONES (LIVE) // HANDSON FAMILY // DOM SERVINI // FUTURE SOUL // JAZZ-INFUSED DUB // GLOBAL GROOVES

Wah Wah 45s returns to Grow with jazz, soul, dub, and reggae from Hekatones, joined by Resonators' Faye Houston & Kassia Zermon, plus DJ sets from Handson Family and label boss Dom Servini.

ABOUT THE EVENT

Hekatones is an instrumental quintet rooted in the style of ska, rocksteady, dub and early reggae, whilst bringing in far-reaching influences such as jazz, psychedelia and folk

from around the world. It's a new, original project from bassist George Berrills, and is a confluence of the many people and musical influences he has met along his journey. A founding member of dub group Resonators, Berrills has shared stages internationally with the likes of The Skatalites, Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, Jimmy Cliff, and Horace Andy. With numerous acclaimed releases with Wah Wah 45s and airplay on BBC Radio 1, 1Xtra, 6 Music and Radio 4, their music has been championed by the likes of David Rodigan, Huey Morgan and Craig Charles. Hekatones will be joined for the first time on a London stage by Resonators vocalists Faye Houston and Kassia Zermon, making this something of a reunion for some key members of the now defunct but hugely popular reggae outfit. This is going to be something very special.

The Handson Family make a welcome return to Wah Wah Live at Grow following their unforgettable DJ session twelve months ago. Husband and wife team Chris & Cyndi Handson's unique style of musical selections, mic technique, as well as sartorial elegance has led them to play DJ sets all over the globe in recent years. The pair are regulars at Gilles Peterson's We Out Here Festival, Jazz Re:Found in Italy, as well as hosting their own stage at Cross The Tracks in Peckham. Indeed, they never forget their roots, and play host to several regular parties in local hood - Peckham and Brixton in South London - supplying their effervescent and unique energy to keep parties jumping from daytime market events to all night raves. Miss them at your peril!

EQUAL PARTS // PARRIS // HOUSE // UK BASS // TECHNO // AMBIENT // GARAGE

Equal Parts touch down at Grow this spring to deliver a very special extended 3-hr set by one of the best in the business: Parris.

ABOUT THE EVENT

A highly regarded selector known for weaving together immersive soundscapes from hypnotic, percussive crescendos and joyous house steppers, Parris' creative evolution reflects a decade inside the engine room of UK club music. With an experimental ear honed at the crucial parties, labels and record shops of the 2010s, the Hackney-born artist has released a host of acclaimed records for cult labels The Trilogy Tapes, Idle Hands and Hemlock. In 2019 Parris launched Can You Feel The Sun, an outlet for his productions with Berlin-based counterpart Call Super and home of his long-awaited full-length album Soaked In Indigo Moonlight (2021). Following this up with one of 2024's biggest releases in Passionfruit, 'a lovely EP that balances club-ready heft with elegant emotion' (RA), Parris' diverse record crates cultivate a unique genre-fluid style that plugs sound system pressure into pulsating house, delicious techno, and fragments of pop glitz. He's graced the decks at world-class clubs and festivals including Houghton and Dekmantel, and dropped recent mixes for Truancy, The Lot Radio, and fabric.

First record 7 pm, last record 3 am.

ABOUT EQUAL PARTS

Conceived in a warehouse just a stone’s throw from Main Yard, Equal Parts have been throwing parties exclusively at Grow four times a year without fail since 2018. Forged in the twilight of Hackney Wick’s warehouse heyday, Equal Parts set out with the humble intention of curating friendly, dance-focused parties that guarantee maximum aural and kinetic pleasure at Hackney Wick’s best-loved DIY venue. Staying true to these roots, seven years on, Equal Parts is now a bona fide Friday-night Grow stalwart, with their resident DJs lining up at recent parties alongside a roster of heavy weight and rising talent, from Wes Baggaley to Tia Cousins and John Gómez. For 2025, Equal Parts ensure top-tier selectors grace Hackney Wick’s best-loved dancefloor yet again, with two road-block dates lined up for Solero season book-ended by two resident-only parties including a Halloween spectacular in October. Expect boat party energy into the early hours with sounds spanning House, Disco, Techno, and everything in-between.

EASTER SUNDAY // PETRA’S DREAM // FREE // DISCO // BOOGIE // BALEARIC// DUB // RARE GROOVE

This Easter Sunday, Petra’s Dream returns to Grow for a night of deep grooves and dancefloor heat, playing all night long – and it’s completely free.

ABOUT THE EVENT

This Easter Sunday, Petra’s Dream—Lukas Kuhn, Kid Dynamite, and Bruno Spadale—return to their spiritual home of Grow for a night of deep grooves and dancefloor heat, playing all night long – and it’s completely free.

KULA COLLECTIVE // BELOVED GEORGE (LIVE) // GRANFERGO (LIVE) // DONWELLA // LATIN // BRAZILIAN // SOULFUL

KULA Collective brings its signature blend of community-driven music to Grow, Hackney for the first time—a collaboration that’s been a long time coming! Expect an evening of Latin-inspired rhythms, soulful grooves, and live energy as we celebrate music that moves both body and spirit.

ABOUT THE MUSICIANS AND DJS

KULA Collective brings its signature blend of community-driven music to Grow, Hackney for the first time—a collaboration that’s been a long time coming! Expect an evening of Latin-inspired rhythms, soulful grooves, and live energy as we celebrate music that moves both body and spirit.

Leading the night is Beloved George, a dynamic band channelling the warmth of Brazilian grooves and Latin American rhythms, transporting you straight to the heart of South America with their infectious sound. With more acts to be announced, this is set to be a night of deep musical connection.

Granfergo is certainly a KULA favourite coming back to perform for the 3rd time!…we simply can’t get enough. Made up of brothers Adam and Euan Dean and childhood friend Joe Cotton, they seamlessly drift into the psychedelic realms of Latin America with elements of cumbia, funk, surf rock and much more. It’s got something for everyone and you just can’t resist busting some 60’s dance moves and get lifted!

Donwella is a DJ and social researcher from London. Through her thoughtfully-curated, genre-fluid sets, she expresses her deep love for a wide range of music.

Donwella’s selections are driven by feeling, rather than a specific genre - reflecting her eclectic musical background and her forever developing musical influences. She grew up in a household that flowed with jazz, hip-hop and soul and started DJing whilst living in Cape Town, inspired by the incredible abundance of South African dance and electronic music.

In her Balamii and Soho Radio residencies and earlier sets, she leans into her latin, soulful, groovy, sunshine-infused collection. In her late-night club mode, percussion and bass lead the way - weaving threads of global diasporic electronic music.

KULA Collective was founded in 2019, inspired by a network of creatives thriving in small, niche scenes across the UK. The word kula comes from Sanskrit, meaning community or tribe—a fitting name for a collective that champions emerging artists and fosters collaboration in intimate spaces across London. Their nights bring together musicians, poets, and artists, creating a welcoming space where audiences can connect, discover, and dance.

Grow is an independent, sustainable venue that believes in keeping music accessible and supporting grassroots artists. We offer free entry before 9pm and affordable tickets on the door to make sure everyone can be part of the experience.

This is just the start of a new musical journey at Grow—come be part of it.

GROW LIVE: ABDOULAYE SAMB // DARE BALOGUN // TRYB // SENEGALESE BLUES // HIGHLIFE // SOUKOUS

Join us for a night of deep grooves as Abdoulaye Samb and Minnjiaraby blend Senegalese traditions with blues and jazz, joined by Dare Balogun and TrYb. A night of celebrating African rhythms and their global influence!

ABOUT THE ARTISTS AND DJS

We’re excited to welcome back Abdoulaye Samb to Grow, Hackney! Originally from Senegal, Abdoulaye is a guitarist, singer, and composer whose music is deeply rooted in Fula and Mandinka traditions, fused with blues, jazz, and global influences. His band Minnjiaraby—meaning "the love of culture"—creates a unique soundscape of intricate guitar work, hypnotic rhythms, and soulful melodies. Having played across Africa and Europe, Abdoulaye brings an energy that is both uplifting and immersive, carrying the stories and spirit of Senegalese music into every performance.

Senegal gained independence from France on April 4, 1960, marking the birth of a sovereign nation rooted in rich cultural heritage and resilience. This day is a celebration of freedom, unity, and the enduring spirit of Senegalese people, reflected in their music, dance, and traditions. As we come together for this event, we also honour Senegal’s legacy—connecting its deep musical traditions with the global rhythms that continue to inspire and evolve. It’s more than just a party; it’s a tribute to history, culture, and the power of music to bring people together.

Keeping the party going after the gig is Dare Balogun, a British-Nigerian artist and curator, Dare seamlessly blends traditional African genres—Highlife, Soukous, and Makossa—into contemporary dance music. As a Balamii Radio resident and founder of Roots to Rhythm, his work highlights the deep connection between African rhythms and modern electronic sounds. His DJ sets, which have taken him from London’s Brilliant Corners to international stages like The Barbican and Public Records NYC, are an exploration of groove, culture, and history. Expect a journey through vibrant percussive sounds, deep-rooted traditions, and forward-thinking club energy.

Warming up the evening is TrYb, a local heavyweight selector, has taken the UK and European music scenes by storm with an undeniable energy. Her electrifying presence has graced iconic stages such as Glastonbury, where she captivated audiences, and she has had the honour of opening for global sensation Megan Thee Stallion.

In addition to her live performances, TrYb is a respected radio host, helming The Highlife and Sunshine Show on NTS and TrYb and Friends on Voices Radio, where she shares her unique blend of diasporic sounds. Unrestricted by genre, TrYb is a master of setting new levels, continuously pushing musical boundaries and making her mark on the global stage.

This event is a celebration of the global connections between African traditions and contemporary sounds. From the deep grooves of Senegal to the dancefloor energy of Afro-infused club music, bringing together two visionary artists who honour the past while shaping the future. A truly unique and unmissable night of rhythm, culture, and movement!

N'Calma Collective returns to Grow Hackney this March 2025 to celebrate their 16th anniversary! For this special milestone, they're curating a great lineup that beautifully blends Brazilian, Afro, and World music.

ABOUT THE PERFORMERS AND DJS

The night features the captivating live band SOMA SOMA from Bristol, guest DJ KAYA M, and resident DJ TIGAS spinning vinyl all night long. Don't miss this unforgettable celebration of rhythm and culture! Soma Soma is a fantastic live act that will transport you to a new world of Afro/Brazilian music and spread pure feelings of connection, joy and nostalgia.

SOMA SOMA:

"Soma Soma are an 8-piece band from Bristol, UK, who offer an exciting mix of world music styles that can only be described as their own Soma Soma sound. Driving percussion, vintage horns, and hypnotic guitar lines work together to seamlessly blend Brazilian styles (Samba/Bossa Nova/Arrocha) with Africa (Highlife/Afrobeat/Soukous) genres to create something completely new and exciting. They are able to take traditional rhythms and infuse them with a modern energy that keeps the audience captivated throughout their performances. One of the most striking aspects of Soma Soma's music is the use of Portuguese lyrics in their songs, which adds an exotic and mysterious element to their sound. Even for those who don't understand the language, the vocal performances are said to be powerful and emotive, conveying the passion and intensity of the music. Soma Soma is a fantastic live act that will transport you to a new world of afro/brazilian music and spread pure feelings of connection, joy and nostalgia".

DJ KAYA M:

Kaya M has made a great mark with her bold sets, honing in on soulful blends of rocksteady, ska, and early stepper's from the 60’s to 90’s. Each month she presents a radio show on Kane FM, and works as a keys player, as part of a studio band for the record label Room in the Sky.

DJ TIGAS:

Brazilian DJ based in London since 2017, Tigas is a world music lover, record collector and an event producer. Co-founder and member of N'Calma Collective since 2009, Tigas has developed a work that brings people together collaborating as a collective, aiming to discover and share new artists and worldwide culture. His music research flies between Brazilian genres & World Music. Jazz, Bossa Nova, Samba, MPB, North Brazilian, Afro-beat, Tropicalia, Funk & Soul, Reggae, Disco, Hip-hop, Chillout and more.

LIVE JAZZ JAM // STRATOS // EVERY THURSDAY

We're inviting you to experience the magic of our weekly Thursday Jazz Jam—completely free! Since 2016, Stratos, our resident jazz band led by the talented and Mercury Prize-nominated Rio Kai, has held down this popular night, bringing together fans and musicians for an electrifying exploration of jazz.

Every week, Stratos dives into both the classic roots and boundary-pushing edges of jazz, creating a unique space where improvisation and connection take centre stage. With Rio Kai on bass, Dom Pusey on saxophone, Mike De Souza on guitar, and Zoe Pascal on drums, each set offers something new—a true celebration of live, evolving music.

After the first set, they open up the jam to jazz musicians who want to get involved! Contact @stratostheband on Instagram if you’re interested in jamming. It’s free entry for jammers.
