GROW is an independent and grassroots cultural space with international impact, based in Hackney Wick. The venue includes busy bars, kitchen and indoor and outdoor areas from which people enjoy good food, drinks and cultural and community events throughout the day into the night. Since opening in 2014, our aim is to extend opportunities for people to enjoy a creative and nurturing environment whilst exploring ecological and social sustainability. We are an accredited Hackney Nights Venue and part of an ecosystem of artist and maker spaces and a working yard called Grow Studios.

BAR MANAGER
Location: Grow, Hackney Wick, E9 5LN
Reports to: Venue & Experience Manager
Responsible for: Leading and supporting the Bar Team during shifts
Contract: 6-month fixed-term contract, with the possibility of extension
Salary: £34,000 per annum (pro rata) + service charge
Hours: Minimum 25 hours per week, with flexibility to increase up to 40 hours depending on operational needs. Both full-time and part-time applicants will be considered.
Availability: Candidates must be available to work evenings and weekends as required.
Start Date: June 2026
Overview
Grow Hackney is an independent canalside venue for music, art, food and community. Since 2014, we’ve operated as an ongoing experiment in culture, sustainability, and ethical business practice.
We’re looking for a Bar Manager who can lead from the front. Balancing excellent service, strong team leadership, and smooth operations, and with an understanding of the wider context we operate in: grassroots culture, community, and sustainability. This is a hands-on role for someone who cares about people, place, and purpose as much as performance.
Key Responsibilities
Service & Operations
Oversee the day-to-day running of the bars across service and events
Lead shifts from the floor, ensuring a warm, efficient and inclusive customer experience
Maintain high standards of cleanliness, presentation, and atmosphere
Manage opening/closing procedures and troubleshoot issues in real time
Team Leadership
Train, and support a diverse bar team
Work with the V&E Manager to ensure rotas balance team wellbeing with business needs
Foster a positive, respectful and communicative working culture
Lead by example - calm, solutions-focused, and consistent
Support Team development and hold accountability where needed
Stock & Financial Oversight
Support in product and equipment ordering, stock control, and wastage
Monitor bar profitability and margins, labour, and bar performance in line with targets
Ensure accurate end-of-day processes
Improve efficiency and margins where possible
Events & Programming Support
Ensure all bars are staffed and prepped appropriately for varying shift/event formats
Work with creative partners on site to deliver music, arts, and community events
Compliance & Responsibility
Uphold licensing laws and responsible alcohol service
Ensure health & safety and hygiene standards are consistently met
Act as a key point of responsibility during service
Sustainability & Ethos
Support Grow’s commitment to sustainability and ethical practice (including London Living Wage and using Green energy)
Minimise waste and encourage responsible use of resources
Represent Grow’s values in how the space is run and how people are treated
Skills & Experience
Experience in a bar or hospitality management role (ideally in events-led venues)
Strong leadership and team management skills
Confident in high-volume, fast-paced environments
Good understanding of stock control, margins, and labour management
Excellent communication and problem-solving skills
Personal licence (preferred but not essential, we will pay for training)

CHEFS
Location: Hackney Wick (E9)
Hours: Full time and Part Time Roles Available
Pay: Competitive, dependent on experience
The role
You’ll be working closely with the Head Chef and kitchen team and central to the day-to-day running and development of the kitchen. You’ll lead by example on the pass, support the head chef in driving standards, and help develop a menu that reflects Grow’s values.
About you
You’ll be an experienced, calm, and organised chef who enjoys working as part of a team. We’re looking for someone who has:
Strong communication, who is team focused
A genuine interest in sustainability and plant-based food
Experience with kitchen admin, understanding of HACCP and kitchen due diligence
Confidence running a service and supporting a team under pressure
Level 2 food hygiene certification (minimum)
