GROOVE ANTHROPOLOGY: SOUND ANTHROPOLOGY // BROR HAVNES (FLAMMER DANCE BAND) // SOMATIC (GLOBAL GROOVES, SPIRITUAL JAZZ, AFRO-FUNK)

  • Grow 98c Wallis Road London, England, E9 5LN United Kingdom (map)

Sound Anthropology present a night of live performance, vinyl, and deep-cut dance music at Grow Hackney, supported by Jazzy Sport London, Vadi Records and Lyskestrekk Records.

ABOUT THE EVENT

Three labels with a shared spirit for connecting underground sounds across scenes, rooted in community, collaboration and globality.

The evening opens with a back-to-back vinyl session from Ayana Homma (Jazzy Sport, Sound Anthropology) and Tommy Khosla (JAWARI, Sound Anthropology), setting the tone with eclectic selections and warm grooves. Sound Anthropology then take the stage with a special live set featuring pianist Mimi Kobayashi, reuniting a collaboration first performed in Japan earlier this year, weaving Hindustani classical, spiritual jazz, and groove for an upbeat take on Sound Anthropology's spiritual jazz music.

As the night unfolds, the decks take over: Mikuri Murakami, making her debut at Grow both behind the decks and with a pop-up showcase of her upcycled denim designs; Bror Havnes (Flammer Dance Band) celebrates his upcoming EP De Som Vet with an eclectic DJ set built for the dancefloor; and closing the night is Somatic, “sound-system-centred global musical traveller” now returning to Grow for the third time. Alongside it all, a pop-up Jazzy Sport vinyl stand will be on hand to dig deeper into the music.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Sound Anthropology

Sound Anthropology is where spiritual jazz meets global and electronic infusions, drawing on Hindustani classical, Japanese folk, and blues’n’soul. Expanding on their original works, the collective creates an immersive musical vision built around rhythm, raga, tala, and maqam.

Bror Havnes

DJ, record collector, and saxophonist, Bror Havnes has a taste for deep cuts and far-reaching rhythms. Known for his monthly Soho Radio show and as a resident at Deptford’s cult Studio Crumb parties, Bror’s sets push into the outer edges of funk, jazz, psychedelia, and global groove. When he’s not behind the decks, you’ll find him on stage with Norway’s hardest-working afrofunk outfit, Flammer Dance Band. Expect adventurous selections, heavy rhythm, and a dancefloor journey that digs way below the surface.

Somatic

Brought up attending festivals from the age of 6 months old and loading sound systems into venues from age 15, Somatic has been immersed in late-night dancing culture from an early age. Initially training as a percussionist Somatic is led by rhythm and the visceral feeling of bass as it washes over the body. Cross-pollinating is unavoidable, from Afrobeat blended with Breaks, Reggaeton Souk refixes, Dabke layered with Garage, Bassline Bollywood, Jungle & Baile Funk crossovers and much more, Somatic is part of a generation of DJ’s who don’t see the boundaries of genres. He’s style has taken him to perform at festivals like Glastonbury & Boomtown, in Indian cities Bangalore & Mumbai, he contributes to the Daytimers collective, holds down a monthly residency on Subtle Radio and has cultivated an avid following for his sell out “Dance Against Racism” event series that he runs with his mum in Exeter.

Mikuri / MURAKAMI ムラカミ
Mikuri Murakami is a London-based DJ and designer whose work moves between moods and mediums. Her sets explore deep, heavy sounds—from jazz and dub to deep house, techno, and experimental synth-driven textures—grounded in bass and space, balancing the raw and soulful, the strange and warm. Under her label MURAKAMI, she creates handmade London-based designs inspired by contrasts of organic and industrial, old and new, reflecting the same playful, thoughtful approach she brings to her music.
