This November, Grow Live joins the EFG London Jazz Festival with two live bands and a night stretching across different corners of contemporary jazz.
ABOUT THE EVENT
Vicente Magalhães Octet
Lisbon-born pianist, composer and arranger Vicente Magalhães has quickly become part of London’s new jazz landscape. Classically trained at the Lisbon Conservatoire before finding his way into jazz and improvised music, his writing carries traces of both worlds alongside the music and culture of his Portuguese roots.
Since moving into the UK scene, Vicente has played alongside Norma Winstone, Elaine Delmar, Dave Green and members of Loose Tubes, while his work as an arranger and musician has also taken him well beyond jazz, working with artists including Nile Rodgers, Kaiser Chiefs and Embrace.
At Grow he brings his new octet, a project inspired in part by Duke Ellington’s approach to writing for the personalities of particular musicians. Original compositions push outward while the arrangements keep a conversation going with the jazz tradition, making space for a large ensemble that can move between tightly written passages and the unpredictability of improvisation.
Diggory Wood Trio
London-based drummer and percussionist Diggory Wood brings together a trio built around experimentation, close listening and interplay.
On piano is composer Sam Johnson, known for his work with the Sam Johnson Big Band and BBC Balcony Sessions, alongside internationally touring double bassist and educator Georgia Johnson, a longstanding presence in the Yorkshire jazz scene.
With Diggory on drums, the trio brings together three distinct musical voices, leaving plenty of room for improvisation and the unexpected.
LAANI
Closing out the evening with a club session until 2am is London DJ, broadcaster and programmer LAANI.
Fusing nu-jazz, neo-soul, Afro rhythms, broken beat and house, LAANI has become a regular fixture across London’s jazz and underground club scenes. She is currently Event Producer at Jazz re, founder of FULLJOY MUSIC, and has previously worked in marketing at Brownswood Recordings and Strut Records. She has also programmed for We Out Here Festival, including the Brownswood Stage and later FULLJOY MUSIC takeovers.
Her DJ sets have taken her to venues including Drumsheds, Fabric, Corsica Studios, Colour Factory, Ronnie Scott’s, The Jazz Cafe and Printworks, alongside festival appearances at Montreux Jazz Festival, Love International, Worldwide Festival Sète, We Out Here, Lost Village and Primavera Sound.
Alongside DJing, LAANI is a regular broadcaster, currently hosting a monthly We Out Here Festival show on Worldwide FM, following her FULLJOY FLEX residency on Rinse FM.
