NOT THE USUAL JAM SESSION // OPEN JAM // FREE

A unique musical experience that breaks the mould. David (The Orbalist, Hackney Rhythm) hosts a jam that is accessible for everyone—no more pay-to-play, no more rehearsed sets. A space where synths, sequencers, MPCs, and E-drums harmonise with guitars, basses, keys, and acoustic drums.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

When Alessandro Corda and David met at the jam, they immediately realised they shared the same passion for music and had similar values. Alex, a versatile musician, DJ, and producer, and a regular at London’s jams and host of a couple, offered to work closely with David. Not only did he manage the stage, but he also contributed behind the scenes, taking the jam to the next level.

Join us on the first Sunday of each month. Admission is free and safe and welcoming to the newcomer or seasoned performer. Whether you’re a keyboard virtuoso, a beatmaker, or a storyteller with a voice, this jam is for you. Bring your passion and your open mind. Let’s create music that transcends the ordinary and be part of the Not The Usual Jam and Grow musical community.

Our stage has hosted the tentative strumming of novice guitarists, the mesmerising loops of experienced producers, and the raw vocals of singers discovering their voices. From Charlie Stacey to Qoha or George The Poet, our stage has welcomed talented artists from various disciplines, including regulars: Alex Mike The Mic, Freddie Mpanga, Nico (MoorMoor), Conor Larkin, Matt Duduryn, Tom Caton, Richard Castle, Simon (Koyoka), and many others who come together to share their music experience, celebrate their progress, enhance growth, and enjoy each other - keeping eclecticism our flagship. The NTUJ session is a sandbox for sonic exploration, where David conducts, orchestrates, and brings people together. Here, musical boundaries dissolve, genres intertwine, and magic is born. Bring your instruments, synths, drum machines, unconventional gear, and curiosity.

If you’d like to take part show up with your instrument, any questions that you may have, please send them to infohackneyrhythm@gmail.com

10 YEARS OF JAZZ JAM WITH STRATOS // DJ PETE // CHANTY74

The first Thursday in June marks 10 years of Stratos’ Jazz Jam at Grow, the weekly night led by Rio Kai. Join us in celebrating this massive milestone.

Since 2016, it’s become part of the rhythm of Hackney Wick. It started out on20th April before landing on Thursdays, and over time, it’s grown into a regular meeting point for musicians and listeners. One of those nights that just kept going, week in, week out, with dedication and commitment, sharing all shades of jazz in our canalside venue.

This anniversary is about bringing that whole community back into the room. The band will play a set of original material in the first set outside on the floating pontoon. In the second set for the jam, we want to welcome back past members, regular players, familiar faces who’ve passed through over the years and new ones. If that’s you, please come and join in the celebration.

It’s been built slowly, over a long stretch of time. Not just by the band, but by everyone who’s played, listened, or found their way into the session and stuck around. If you’ve ever been part of it, this is for you. Come down, celebrate jazz in all its forms and get involved in the jam. Let's raise a glass to this outstanding 10 year residency centred around the community and good music.

The evening will also be soundtracked by DJ Pete and Chanty74, two selectors woven into the history of Grow’s jazz nights. Pete has led the DJ side of the Thursday sessions for a number of years, helping shape the sound around the live music and keeping the night moving between sets. Chanty74, who first introduced us to Rio and Djed in the early days, brings her own rich South African-rooted selections, joining the dots between psychedelic jazz, soul, hip hop, world music, house and beyond.

STRATOS THE BAND

Led and founded by Rio Kai, Stratos is Grow’s house band and the driving force behind the weekly Thursday jazz residency. Across the past decade, the band has held down the night while continuing to evolve through new collaborations, original material and the wider community that has grown around it.

Rio Kai

Rio Kai is a multi-award-winning bassist, musical director and composer. He has performed as both a bandleader and sideman across a range of projects, including SEED Ensemble, which received a Mercury Prize nomination in 2019, Nérija, winner of Best Newcomer at the 2017 Parliamentary Jazz Awards, the Benet McLean Quintet, Do Not Assume, and collaborations with the London Contemporary Orchestra and London Symphony Orchestra. An alumnus of Tomorrow’s Warriors, Rio performs regularly across London’s jazz scene and has also built a major body of work in theatre as a principal musician, musical director and co-composer. Stratos has been a central part of that journey over the past decade.

Dom Pusey

Dom Pusey has been part of Stratos since 2019. Born in Hertfordshire, he began performing professionally on saxophone and guitar at 15, before studying at the University of North Texas and graduating from the University of Leeds. Since moving to London in 2016, he has collaborated with artists including Wilma Archer and Celeste, and has performed with The O’Jays. His work has also featured across live TV, radio, and recordings for the BBC, Channel 4 and ITV. Alongside Stratos, Dom continues to develop his own original work, including recent releases with his trio.

Mike De Souza

Mike De Souza is a composer and educator known for his lyrical improvisation, textural sound world and genre-crossing approach. A graduate of the Royal Academy of Music and Leeds College of Music, he has released music as a bandleader including Chrysalis on Fresh Sound New Talent and Pond Life with Big Bad Wolf. As a sideman, he has worked with Byron Wallen, Alex Paxton, Phil Meadows, Joy Ellis, Belle Chen and Twospeak, and has performed internationally at venues and festivals across Europe. Since joining Stratos in 2023, he has become an important part of the band’s current sound.

Zoe Pascal

Zoe Pascal is a drummer who began gaining recognition at a young age, becoming Soultone’s youngest UK endorsee at 11, a VATER artist at 13, and a finalist in Young Drummer of the Year in 2015, 2016 and 2017. He developed through two major jazz education programmes, Junior Jazz Academy at the Royal Academy of Music and Tomorrow’s Warriors, where he was mentored by figures including Gary Crosby, Nathaniel Facey and Binker Golding. Zoe has performed widely with his band Zeñel at venues and festivals including Ronnie Scott’s, Love Supreme, EFG London Jazz Festival and the Royal Albert Hall, and was named a Jazzwise Artist to Watch in 2018 and 2019.

JAZZ JAM WITH STRATOS // EVERY THURSDAY // SPECIAL GUESTS: AROWAH + WREN

Join us for an evening hosted by Rio Kai,  bandleader of house band Stratos, alongside special guests, in our intimate, reimagined canalside venue.

Rio is a Mercury Prize-nominated bassist known for his energetic rhythmic phrasing and blistering lines. Hosting this one-off night, bringing special guests into the heart of our weekly jazz series. Plus entry is just £5 on the door and £6/8 for a table and ticket in advance.

Over the coming months, Rio will be inviting more guest artists to Grow’s Thursday jazz session, with a focus on rising women instrumentalists who are shaping the future of the UK music scene. This curated evening offers a rare chance to see Rio step beyond the usual Stratos lineup, spotlighting next-generation talent.

Rio Kai says:

“As someone who has had the opportunity to regularly play at Grow Hackney and have the overwhelming support of the team at Grow, as well as the local community, being able to share that platform with artists from all different walks of life and points in their careers holds a personal affinity for me. Being able to provide a space for visibility and recognition for artists that may not be as represented in the music scene holds great importance, and should also be a chance for artists within the community to connect with each other as well as new audiences.”

The first set begins at 7.30pm, followed by a late-night jam session starting at 9.30pm.

The final special guests of the series are two brilliant voices from London’s jazz community.

Arowah is a composer and multi-instrumentalist whose work bridges music, activism and sound healing. A co-founder of Queer Jazz and former leader of Jelly’s Jams, they have led projects including B.H.A.M., The Forever Presence and All Day Breakfast Cafe.

Wren is a 20 year old alto saxophonist studying at the Royal Academy of Music. They have already performed at major venues including the Barbican, Hammersmith Apollo and the Purcell Room, and have played alongside artists such as Wynton Marsalis, Laura Jurd and Corrie Dick.

About Rio Kai

Rio is a Mercury Prize-nominated bassist known for his energetic rhythmic phrasing and blistering lines . Rio is a core member of the 11-piece British jazz ensemble seed., and of Courtney Pine’s House of Legends. He has also served as Musical Director at Shakespeare’s Globe, most recently for this year’s production of Othello. His playing blends deep rhythmic intuition with a bold, contemporary approach, firmly positioning him among the most compelling voices in UK jazz.

JAZZ JAM WITH STRATOS // EVERY THURSDAY // SPECIAL GUESTS: SHIRLEY TETTEH + FLO REDMONDS

For this session, two special guest artists will be joining the stage at our Jazz Jam. We’re excited to welcome Shirley Tetteh, a guitarist whose journey into jazz began with Tomorrow’s Warriors and has since seen her become one of the most in-demand players on the UK scene. From Nérija and Maisha to Jazz Jamaica and Groundation, Shirley’s work bridges forward-thinking jazz with groove, experimentation and original improvisation.

Also joining us is Flo Redmonds, a rising saxophonist already making waves with her powerful sound and fluid, expressive approach. A Guildhall alumna and former NYJO member, Flo has shared stages with some of the UK’s most exciting jazz artists and was recently named a Jazzwise Future Mover at Ronnie Scott’s.Our reimagined canalside snug becomes a warm, plant-filled stage space where you can sit just a few feet from some of London’s finest jazz musicians and savour every detail of the music and setting.

To mark the season, our menu will take on a festive twist, with mulled wine and mulled apple to keep things cosy, plus an extra-special seasonal Espresso Martini made with Honduras La Cidra guest beans from Square Mile Coffee Roasters.

The first set begins at 7.30pm, followed by a late-night jam session starting at 9.30pm.
