Celebrating Hidden Literature: A Farewell to Grow’s Beloved Open Mic Nights
Since 2022, Grow Hackney has had the privilege of hosting Hidden Literature’s MY WORD open mic nights, and what a journey it has been. These intimate, soulful evenings brought together poetry, spoken word, Hip Hop, R&B and Neo Soul, creating a space where artists of all backgrounds could share their voices and stories.
MY WORD was more than just a stage. Poets, singers, rappers and musicians, whether veterans or newcomers, were welcomed to perform acapella, with their own instruments, or using a backing track. Hosted by Ovyuki, each night radiated fun, positivity and deep connection, allowing performers to express themselves authentically while the audience shared in their journey.
Open mic opportunities like this provide a supportive space for writers and musicians to express themselves, connect with others and grow within a community. Writing and performing can be deeply personal, sometimes making us feel like “the only one.” Nights like these remind us that we are not alone in our search for meaning and self-expression, that others share our questions, concerns and curiosity. They are validating, enriching and, at the same time, fun and entertaining.

While it is bittersweet to see MY WORD come to a close at Grow, we are immensely grateful for the magic it has brought to our space and Hackney’s creative community. Hidden Literature has left a lasting mark, one of courage, connection and the joy of shared storytelling.
