TOMMY KHOSLA + YIJIA // LIVE SITAR LED NEO JAZZ & WORLD MUSIC

  • Grow 98c Wallis Road London, England, E9 5LN United Kingdom (map)

Tommy Khosla is a young British sitarist and composer whose recent debut album, Vignettes, was featured in Songlines Magazine.

The producer and sitarist fuses Indian Classical Music and ethereal contemporary sounds. He returns to Grow to host and curate another evening of modern world music with artists from his creative community.

This openness to other creative worlds is a central feature of Khosla’s work. He cites influences including hip-hop, lo-fi beats, folk and bossa nova, as well as the ground-breaking Indian musician Ananda Shankar and the sitarist Anoushka Shankar. That many of these use electronics is important to them: “I love using electronic music, it just takes it to another place.” This also enables a certain self-sufficiency, something they felt was important for a first album seeking to establish an individual voice.

Line Up

Tommy Khosla and Jawari

Contemporary sitarist Tommy Khosla and their band Jawari will be presenting their final set of the year. This four piece band features Tommy Khosla on sitar and synth, Gregorio Merchán on percussion, Kenichi Kojima on guitar, and Taylor Frost on bass, cello and electric guitar. Inspired by both Neo and Indo-Jazz, the band is venturing into new expressions of the sitar - informed by jazz, bossa, psychedelic and electronics.

Joining the band for part of the set will be special guests: the award-winning poet Lagnajita Mukhopadhyay, tabla expert Mahesh Parkar, jazz vocalist Ella Sophoclides, saxophonist/vocalist Billie Sophoclides and Yijia Tu.
