[EFG JAZZ FEST] LOVE IS EVERYWHERE #9: TINA EDWARDS // PAUL MURPHY (JAZZ DANCE // BROKEN BEAT // LATIN // HOUSE // JAZZ DISCO)

The ninth edition of Tina Edwards’ jazz dancefloor party welcomes a pioneering legend of jazz dance. Expect uncompromising percussion, high tempo break-downs and lucious horns, all at the hands of Jazz Room Records head-honcho Paul Murphy.

ABOUT THE EVENT

A huge inspiration for a young Giles Peterson, Murphy’s impact on club culture in the UK cannot be underestimated. Since his London residencies in the ‘70s and ‘80s, he’s brought jazz into club spaces—and was one of the first to do so. 

As always, the night will open with a free entry, beginner friendly jazz dancefloor lesson from one of the world’s most admired dancers in the scene, Masumi Endo. Dance collective The Footnotes will return to the party of their founding to perform right before the headline set. 

The Love Is Everywhere experience orbits jazz, expanding into Latin and Brazilian rhythms, jazz-disco and broken beat.  The first set from Tina Edwards leans hard into the jazz dance spirit, with her second set taking on more of a four to the floor flavour. 

PAUL MURPHY

Playing an explosive mix of Jazz, Latin, Soul and contemporary dance music to discerning crowds across the planet, Paul Murphy has been deejaying since the late ‘70s. His musical journey has wound through residencies at celebrated London clubs The Wag, The Electric Ballroom, The 100 Club and Hoxton Square’s Blue Note, alongside performances with the likes of Tito Puente, Celia Cruz, Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers, Jimmy McGriff, Tania Maria and Lonnie Smith.

Paul also ran a highly influential record shop and managed a label, overseeing the release of the politically inspired Venceremos by London Jazz-dance collective Working Week, alongside albums by British Jazzers Tommy Chase and Harry Beckett.

He has several compilations under his belt, including Jazz Club Volumes 1 and 2, Return to the Jazz Club on Ace Records, Jazz Room Volumes 1 and 2 on BBE Records and Covers on the Jazz Room label.

His own Jazz Room Records has released an eclectic selection of music, from Take Vibe’s take on The Stranglers’ Golden Brown and West Coast fluteman Eric Ghost, to vibraphonist Khan Jamal, Japanese funk fusionists indigo jam unit, Nuyorican Latin House from Tata Vasquez and Fela Kuti-meets-Cumbia vibes with Mitchum Yacoub.

Paul’s expertise in finding the rare and obscure and matching it with the new and fresh inspired the likes of Gilles Peterson, who has said: “Paul Murphy found almost every Jazz Dance classic. He is the Original Messenger of Jazz. He opened the door to an alternative way of being a DJ.”

TINA EDWARDS

DJ, broadcaster, music journalist and curator Tina Edwards has been proudly spotlighting the UK Jazz scene since the early 2010s, putting music-heads onto inspiring sounds through every medium possible. Whether via her radio home Bandcamp Selects, the subscriber-based Jazz-ish Jazz Club, her programming across the UK and Europe or her DJ sets, her deep digging is evident.

With contagious energy and deep music knowledge, from West African groove and Latin-house to 00s Italo Jazz, Tina’s sets are never predictable. An internationally acclaimed DJ, she encourages dancers to ignore the booth and stay present on the dance floor.

Tina began DJing shortly before the pandemic; since then, demand behind the decks has taken her and her red box of 45s around the world, performing in Australia, Japan, Singapore, LA, Chicago and across Europe. She’s played Glastonbury, Montreux Jazz and North Sea, alongside headline sets for the BAFTAs Official After Party, film premieres, Netflix and Ray-Ban.

Tina’s sets are wildly eclectic and full of wild cards, but her grounding comes from the language of jazz. The Londoner is recognised as one of the few DJs of her generation upholding jazz dance floor culture, something she continues through her internationally renowned night Love Is Everywhere, which draws established jazz dancers from across Europe and Asia.

Wherever she plays, her sets avoid predictable arcs. Latin jazz, cumbia, off-beat disco, Afro-diasporic grooves, psychedelia and obscure 45s picked up on her travels all feed into her playful, intoxicating sets.

MASUMI ENDO (jazz dance teacher)
Masumi Endo is a dancer, choreographer, and movement director. Born in Fukuoka, Japan, she began ballet at the age of 3 and learned various street dance styles such as Hip-hop, Lock dance, Soul, and House from the age of 11. She moved from Tokyo to London in 2023 and has been performing and teaching regularly across London since.

Foot Notes is an open community in London who celebrate dance and music through the lens of UK Jazz Dance. Foot Notes gave their first ever public performance at Love Is Everywhere #4.
