Live jazz, open jams, jazz dance and late-night sessions at Grow this November

The EFG London Jazz Festival returns from 13–22 November, and Grow is once again joining the festival’s club programme. Across four events, we’ll be moving through contemporary jazz, improvisation, jazz dance, broken beat, Latin sounds and more.

Friday 13th – Grow Live: Vicente Magalhães Octet // Diggory Wood Trio // LAANI

We open our EFG programme with two live bands followed by a club session until 2am. Lisbon-born pianist, composer and arranger Vicente Magalhães brings his new octet to Grow, with original compositions that move between detailed ensemble writing and open improvisation. The Diggory Wood Trio brings drummer Diggory together with pianist Sam Johnson and double bassist Georgia Johnson for a set built around experimentation and close interplay. LAANI closes the night with the club session, moving through Afro rhythms, broken beat and house.

Thursday 19th – Jazz Jam with Stratos

Our weekly Jazz Jam with Stratos has been running at Grow since 2016, so naturally it’s part of this year’s festival programme. Led by bassist Rio Kai alongside Dom Pusey, Mike De Souza and Zoe Pascal, the night starts with a full set from the band before opening up for musicians to join the jam. Players of all levels are welcome, with free entry for jammers.

Saturday 21st – Love Is Everywhere #9: Tina Edwards + Paul Murphy

Tina Edwards brings the ninth edition of Love Is Everywhere to Grow with one of the key figures in UK jazz dance culture, Paul Murphy. The Jazz Room Records founder has been playing jazz, Latin, soul and dance music since the late 1970s, with residencies including The Wag, Electric Ballroom, 100 Club and the original Blue Note. Tina opens and closes the night, with a free beginners jazz dance class from Masumi Endo at 7pm and a performance from Masumi and Foot Notes before Paul Murphy’s headline set.

Sunday 22nd – Canalside Sessions with Williams Cumberbache & Special Guests

We finish our festival run with a free Sunday afternoon by the canal. Master conga player Williams Cumberbache hosts Canalside Sessions from 1–4pm, bringing together special guests from London’s jazz and global music scenes. Expect live music spanning jazz fusion, Afro-Latin, Brazilian and African sounds from our pontoon stage, with this year’s EFG guests still to be announced.

Four different sides of jazz at Grow

Across the programme you can catch a new eight-piece ensemble, join an open jam, dig into the history and future of UK jazz dance, stay on the dancefloor until 2am and finish the festival with live music by the canal on Sunday afternoon.
