About Gina Southgate

Gina Southgate has made a name for herself over the last 30 years as an artist who paints live, mostly at jazz and improv gigs; composing her pictures in real time or as a collaboration with musicians in responsive interactive abstraction. Gina works with the frisson of the music observing the relationship between the musician and instrument, capturing both the visual energy of the performers and the abstract, sonic, essence of the gig with paint, in real time.

Originally trained as a silversmith, Gina is also an educator who has taught from community groups to degree level and has a long-standing artistic partnership with the NHS. She also paints landscapes, seascapes and cityscapes.

Gina has been resident-in-artist at Grow on numerous occasions, setting up her easel whilst house band Stratos, led by Mercury Prize nominee Rio Kai play their acclaimed sets on our canalside terrace.
